The Finnish Parliament has announced the election of former Chair of the Finns Party, Jussi Halla-aho, as its Speaker, Investing.com. reports.
According to a statement released by the Parliament to the press on June 21, Halla-aho received 134 votes in the 200-seat legislative body.
Traditionally, the Speaker's position is held by a member of the second-largest party in the Parliament. Following the elections on April 2, the Finns Party became the second-largest party.
Born in 1971, Halla-aho has served as a Member of Parliament from 2011 to 2014 and from July 2019 to the present. From 2014 to 2019, he was a Member of the European Parliament. He served as the Chair of the Finns Party from 2017 to 2021.
The Finnish Parliament has the authority to enact legislation based on government proposals, parliamentary initiatives, or citizen initiatives.
