Hundreds of people gathered outside the Frontex office in the Greek port of Piraeus on June, 18 to protest against the shipwreck of a migrant vessel off the coast of Pylos, Euronews reports.
Around 750 men, women, and children from Syria, Egypt, Palestine, and Pakistan were on board the ship, which was sailing from Libya to Italy.
The bodies of 78 victims have been discovered, while 104 individuals have been rescued.
On June 18, a memorial church service took place in the nearby port of Kalamata to commemorate the victims.
The protesters are questioning whether the coast guard could have prevented the tragedy and if they should have intervened earlier to transport the passengers to a safe place.
Greek coast guard and government officials state that their patrol boats and nearby cargo ships were monitoring the overcrowded boat. They detected it as early as Tuesday through the efforts of the European agency Frontex. However, according to Frontex representatives, the crew of the migrant vessel declined the offered assistance."
On June 14, near the shores of Greece, a fishing vessel transporting migrants from Libya to Italy capsized.
