Bangladesh's application to join the BRICS alliance has been accepted, Dhaka Tribune reports. The official request was made by Bangladesh Prime Minister Hasina Wajid and sent to South Africa, the current chair of BRICS, as confirmed by Foreign Minister Abdul Momin.
The Foreign Minister expressed hope that Bangladesh will soon become a member of BRICS and actively contribute to the development of the community. Currently, Bangladesh is listed as one of the "friends of BRICS," as reported by NSN.
Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president, announced on June 17 that several countries have expressed their intention to join BRICS. The expansion of the alliance's membership will be a topic on the agenda of the upcoming summit in August.
He noted that now there are nuances in the approaches, which is the best format for expansion to adopt and whether it is worth accepting. However, he stressed that the topic will definitely be put forward during the discussion.
The upcoming BRICS summit, scheduled to take place in South Africa this August, might include discussions about new membership.
