News about the contamination of the Zarafshon River in Uzbekistan circulated on social media. The situation was investigated by the employees of the Ecology Department of the Navoi region.
During the investigation, it was discovered that the fish in the Zarafshon River had died. The dead fish were collected from the river, and samples of water and soil were obtained in collaboration with the staff of the Environmental Monitoring Department of the regional Ecology Department, "Navoiy IES" CJSC, and "Navoiyazot" CJSC. Additional information was announced after the completion of the investigation.
In October 2022, further confirmation emerged that fish in the Zarafshon River had perished. Legal actions were taken against officials from "Navoiyazot" CJSC due to their involvement in contaminating the river, which runs through the Karmana district of the Navoi region. The company denied any involvement in the fish poisoning. As a result of water pollution exceeding the permissible level, a total of 4,204 fish of various species with a value of $222,782 died.
