In Kazakhstan, 1229 cases of measles have been reported since the beginning of the year, with 1017 of them being children and adolescents. According to our Daryo correspondent in Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Health has identified the primary cause of the high infection incidence.
The main cause was parent's unwillingness to vaccinate their children. The Ministry of Health reports that 547 people became unwell as a result of non-vaccination. Every year, up to 6,000 people refuse to be vaccinated.
"Even if it is 6,000, they play a significant role, because the loss of one child's health is also significant to us. As a result, much effort has been made to avoid disaster. Some people feel that the infection no longer poses a problem, that it simply does not exist, but statistics demonstrate otherwise," said Nurshai Azimbayeva, chairman of the committee for sanitary and epidemiological control section for vaccine-preventable infections.
At the same time, the virus was detected in 35 people who arrived from other countries: Egypt (12), Turkey (7), Uzbekistan (5), Saudi Arabia (4), Tajikistan (2), and Kyrgyzstan (1).
Among the most extreme incidents is a widespread outbreak in two kindergartens in Astana. A toddler infected eight unvaccinated children with measles in one of the kindergartens, and four in the other. Preschool organisations will face penalties for allowing unvaccinated children to attend school.
The distribution of measles cases reported by clinics around the country are as follows: Almaty has 614 cases, Almaty region has 170 cases, and Atyrau area has 97 cases .
