The press secretary of the president reports that Shavkat Mirziyoyev extended his condolences to Indian President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the tragic railway accident in India. The Uzbek president expressed deep sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
The accident occurred on June 2 in Odisha when the Coromandel Express passenger train collided with a freight train at around 19:20 local time. As a result, eight train cars derailed, with some overturning onto an adjacent track where another passenger train struck them. The Hindustan Times reported that the death toll from the train collision has now reached 288, making it the largest accident in India in the past two decades. The country has declared a period of mourning.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences and announced that the families of the victims would receive compensation of approximately $24,300, while the injured would be provided with a little over $600.
