The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates announced on its website that the country has withdrawn from the US-led coalition on maritime security.
The UAE made this decision two months ago after evaluating the effectiveness of its security cooperation with all partners. The Emirates' Ministry of Foreign Affairs also emphasized its commitment to upholding the safety of navigation within its territorial waters in accordance with international law.
The coalition, consisting of 34 nations, was established to enhance security in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, as well as to combat terrorism and piracy. Its headquarters are located in Bahrain, where the US 5th Fleet is also based.
The UAE's withdrawal from the coalition comes after Iran's seizure of two tankers in the Persian Gulf. The Wall Street Journal reported that the UAE's decision was influenced by the perceived inadequate response from the United States to Iran's threats.
