On June 2, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev is expected to visit Cholpon-Ata in Kyrgyzstan to attend the upcoming 'Central Asia - European Union summit. The press service of the head of state has confirmed that the event will witness the participation of the leaders of the region and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.
The event aims to enhance communication and broaden collaboration between Central Asian nations and the European Union with the primary objective of elevating bilateral trade through the utilization of the GSP+ status, which was granted to Uzbekistan in 2021, resulting in a significant increase in the country's exports to the EU.
Besides, the parties are expected to discuss measures aimed at creating favorable conditions for investment and innovation projects, implementing green energy, unlocking the potential of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor running through China, Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and further to Türkiye and European countries, partnerships in the field of digital connectivity, ecology, tourism, culture, and other areas.
In addition to the summit, several bilateral meetings are planned on the sidelines.
The first regional meeting in this format was held on October 27, 2022, in Astana, Kazakhstan. Central Asian leaders have demonstrated interest in boosting institutionalized cooperation with the EU and promoting sustainable interregional connectivity. These efforts align with the EU Global Gateway strategy and the national transport and transit development initiatives of Central Asian states.
