Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his concerns about the delay in Ukraine's NATO membership, stating that the country's hope is diminishing as alliance members are pushing back the decision.
He emphasized the need for a "clear positive decision" regarding Ukraine's candidacy by autumn.
Zelensky highlighted the disappointment among Ukrainians who do not see a definitive answer regarding their membership in the European Union and NATO. Speaking at the Moldova summit of the European political community, he acknowledged the fading hopes of Ukraine.
On September 30, 2022, Zelensky officially applied for Ukraine's accelerated NATO membership. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has repeatedly stated that approving the application would invoke the alliance's fifth article, which obliges all member states to respond in the event of an attack on a member. NATO's rules prohibit accepting a country with unresolved territorial conflicts.
In May, Zelensky acknowledged that Ukraine's NATO membership cannot proceed until the military conflict with Russia is resolved. However, he emphasized the importance of obtaining guarantees for Ukraine's future membership in the alliance once the hostilities have ended.
