Former president of the Kyrgyz Republic, Askar Akayev, and his wife, Mayram Akayeva, entered Kyrgyzstan through the "White Road" checkpoint on May 20, sources from the border service report.
This marks their first visit to their homeland together since 2005. Askar Akayev had previously visited Kyrgyzstan twice in 2021, once for questioning related to the "Kumtor" case and another time to give lectures. This time, the purpose of their visit is to give lectures at the National Academy of Sciences and the Polytechnic Institute.
In January 2023, it was announced that the criminal case against Askar Akayev regarding corruption in the "Kumtor" mine excavation had been suspended. Mayram Akayeva has visited her birthplace, the Talas region, several times in the past decade.
Askar Akayev served as the president of the Kyrgyz SSR from 1990 to 1991 and as the president of the Kyrgyz Republic from 1991 to 2005. He won four presidential elections during his tenure. Following mass protests and clashes in 2005, he fled the country and has been residing in Moscow since then, working as a professor at a Moscow university.
