Turkmenistan's new parliament (Mejlis) has unanimously elected Dunyagozel Gulmanova as its speaker, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov attended the first session. Gulmanova made a statement.
"The people's deputies will work with inspiration to further improve the legal framework to strengthen national statehood, dynamic economic, social and cultural development of the homeland, and increase its authority in the international arena."
The parliament of the seventh convocation has eight committees: on protection of human rights and freedoms; on legislation; on economic issues; on social policy; on science, education, culture and youth policy; on environmental protection; on international affairs; and on work with local representative authorities and local self-government.
Berdimuhamedov, addressing the deputies, said the following.
"Protection of human and civil rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of Turkmenistan is the main goal of our state policy".
The parliamentary elections took place on March 26. Of the 3.4mn electorate, 91.12% voted. The report said that 25.60% of the deputies were women. The composition of the deputies is noticeably younger: about 10% are citizens under 30 years of age and 40.80% are under 40 years of age.
