As one of the world's oldest breeds, the Alabay (Central Asian shepherd dog) is Turkmenistan's national treasure and is not allowed out of the country, Terranea (Spain) reports.
In addition to Turkmenistan, most dogs of this breed are found in Russia, other Central Asian countries, and neighboring Afghanistan.
"The Alabay is one of the quintessential animals. However, despite its local popularity, it is little known outside the former Soviet Union".
This is unusual given that it is one of the most ancient breeds, estimated to have been created over 4,000 years ago. Its physical characteristics and protective nature make it an ideal guard dog and one of the preferred dogs for guarding flocks of goats and sheep against possible wolf attacks.
Despite its imposing size, this sheepdog is a nimble and quick dog with great endurance. With its broad back and considerable stature, it can reach a length of 70-80 centimeters and weigh up to 90 kilograms. Their lifespan is about 12 years.
Its coat color can vary with shades of white, brown, cream, and black combined, although the nose is usually black only. Although dominant, it is a dog with a calm and balanced temperament and is usually friendly.
It is a dog comfortable around families and children, becoming a loyal companion if properly trained and tamed from puppyhood.
However, this can change if alabay is suddenly in unfamiliar surroundings where he may become very nervous, given that their job is to guard the area.
