Russian billionaire of Uzbek origin Alisher Usmanov ranked 121st in the global ranking of the richest people published by Forbes.
The businessman's fortune which is estimated at $14.4 billion mainly comes from metallurgy and telecommunications. The 69-year-old Usmanov owns stakes in Chinese electronics maker Xiaomi, and other media companies. From 2000 to 2014, Usmanov headed Gazprom's subsidiary, Gazprom Investholding.
Forbes cites that the Russian tycoon made his first fortune making plastic bags, which were so rare in the former Soviet Union that people used to wash and reuse them.
Today, the founder and shareholder of the USM holding lives in Tashkent. In an interview with the Italian TV channel TGcom24, he said that he had left the business to help Uzbekistan. He called his decision to invest in Uzbekistan a "great goal."
The editors of Forbes Russia, based on the international rating, placed Usmanov in eighth place on the list of the richest Russians.
Andrey Melnichenko, a former member of the board of directors of EuroChem Group, with a fortune of $ 25.2 billion, became the richest man in Russia.
