Greenhouse bell peppers cost spike explained by abnormal cold during winter season

Greenhouse bell peppers cost spike explained by abnormal cold during winter season

Wholesale prices for yellow and red greenhouse bell peppers have climbed vividly in Uzbekistan over the past week. Due to their rapid increase over the first quarter of 2023, prices for bell peppers have caught up with prices for meat owing to the considerable loss of bell pepper crops in greenhouses during the January abnormal cold as weather conditions affected the crop yield, EastFruit reports.

In Tashkent's supermarkets, retail prices for yellow greenhouse bell peppers of California variety are about UZS 80,000 UZS per kilogram ($7.0), and prices for red greenhouse bell peppers range from UZS 80,000 to UZS 100,000 per kilogram (from $7.00 to $8.8). Costs for green greenhouse bell peppers range from UZS 65,000 to 95,000 per kilogram (from $5.7 to $8.3), depending on the variety.

For comparison, Uzbek consumers may purchase bone-in beef in the same supermarkets at about UZS 80,000 per kilogram ($7.0) and boneless meat at about UZS 97,000 ($8.5) per kilogram.

The average wholesale price for yellow greenhouse bell peppers in the Central Asian country climbed from UZS 58,000 to UZS 78,000 UZS per kilogram (from $5.1 to $6.8) on March 24-31, 2023, i.e., by 34% over a week. This price jump was the highest weekly growth rate observed since early 2023. Given the growing trend in wholesale prices, bell peppers' average price has surged more than 1.5 times over the previous month and 2.2 times since early 2023.

As of late March 2023, the average wholesale price for greenhouse yellow peppers in the Central Asian country was almost twice higher than on the same date last year and 1.6 times higher than on the same date in 2021.

Greenhouse red bell pepper is the next leader in weekly price growth. In late March of this year, its average wholesale price climbed from UZS 60,000 to UZS 72,000 per kilogram (from $5.3 to $6.3) by 20% in a week. Over the past month, the average wholesale cost of greenhouse red peppers has climbed by almost 1.5 times and 2.4 times since early 2023.

As of March 31, 2023, the average wholesale price for greenhouse red bell peppers in Uzbekistan was 1.8 times higher than in the same period in 2021-2022.

Wholesale prices for greenhouse green bell peppers have remained stable over the past three weeks but have steadily risen from early January to the end of the first decade of March. In January-February 2023, the average wholesale prices for green bell peppers were at least 1.5 times higher than in the same period in 2020-2022.

According to the portal, as of late March, the average wholesale price for green greenhouse bell peppers in Uzbekistan was almost threefold higher than in the same period last year and 31% higher than in 2021.
