The President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan appointed his son Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, DW reports.
Sheikh Khalid's appointment will further centralize power in Abu Dhabi. It also reflects the trend of son-brother succession in other Gulf states like Saudi Arabia.
As noted in the publication, the president of the UAE made a number of changes in the top leadership of the country. In particular, he appointed his brother Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the owner of the British Manchester City football club, as the country's vice president. With the appointment of a new vice president, the head of state will have two deputies at the same time, the first being the ruler of Dubai, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Sheikh Mohammed appointed his brothers, Sheikhs Hazza and Tahnua, as deputy rulers of the emirate. They also serve as national security advisers to the president.
In addition, the president reformed the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, the central governing body of the emirate, which he heads. From now on, the crown prince, that is, Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, will head the council.
