The United States plans to allocate $9.5bn to support democracy in the world in fiscal years 2022-2024, according to a statement on the White House website.
"In Fiscal Years 2022, 2023, and 2024, the US has invested and aims to provide approximately $9.5 billion, working with Congress and subject to the availability of appropriations, to support democracy, human rights, and good governance globally," - the statement said.
On March 28, the "Democracy Summit" kicked off in the US, and the event will continue until March 30. 120 heads of state are attending it. The war in Ukraine, the fight against corruption, cooperation in the development of democracy, the status of women, and other issues are on the agenda. The US held its first "Democracy Summit" in December 2021, and the current one is the second.
In his speech at the opening of the summit, US President Joe Biden said that the United States will allocate $690mn over two years to support democracy, including an independent press, and free and fair elections around the world.
Biden also noted that the democracies of the world, in his view, were "stronger", while the autocracies were the opposite. "Democracy must be constantly protected," the US president added.
