Belarus called the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons on the country's territory "compulsory countermeasures" to strengthen its defense capabilities and security. On the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, a relevant statement was published.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, this step does not violate the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in any way.
"Military cooperation between Belarus and Russia is carried out on the basis of strict norms of international law. Training Belarussian pilots capable of piloting aircraft with certain ammunition, modernization of such aircraft is equivalent to placing nuclear warheads on the territory of Belarus under the control of Russia, without the supervision of Minsk.
"The use of relevant technologies does not in any way contradict the provisions of Articles I and II of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons," - the statement said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that such actions cannot be called "an innovation in the field of military cooperation between non-nuclear and nuclear powers." Diplomats of Belarus appealed to NATO, "where the practice of joint nuclear missions has existed for a long time." It is said that 150 US tactical nuclear weapons and 250 aircraft for their use are deployed on the territory of the member states of the alliance. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not provide any evidence for these statistics.
Russia deploys nuclear weapons in Belarus
On March 25, Putin said that Russia and Belarus had agreed to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus without violating international obligations. Putin explained that Russia is not giving its nuclear weapons to Belarus, but is doing what the USA has been doing for ten years. Russia will complete the construction of a storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus on July 1.
The German Foreign Ministry called Russia's statement about plans to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus "another attempt at nuclear intimidation." Also, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Putin's example of deploying nuclear weapons in NATO countries is "confusing and unfounded."
