The price of greenhouse tomatoes in Uzbekistan is growing incrementally, breaking records every week. The wholesale price of tomatoes has increased by almost 70%since the beginning of the year, EastFruit reports.
Reportedly, the extreme cold which hit hard the most populous country of the region affected the harvest.
From February 3 to March 10, the average wholesale price of round red greenhouse tomatoes increased from 18,000 soums to 27,000 soums/kg, i.e. by 50%.
From February 10 to March 10, the average wholesale price of pink tomatoes increased from 20,000 soums to 33,000 soums/kg, i.e. by 65% in one month.
As of March 10, 2023, the average wholesale price of pink tomatoes in Uzbekistan was 2.8 times higher than the same date last year and 2.2 times higher than the same date in 2021.
According to Husan Haydarov, the commercial director of GDF Export, the largest exporter of fruits and vegetables in Uzbekistan, the frost, the gas pressure in many greenhouse complexes dropped significantly, because during this period there was a shortage of natural gas throughout the country.
The largest losses were observed in greenhouses of Surkhandarya, Kashkadarya, Samarkand and Tashkent regions and Fergana Valley.
According to the expert, if tomatoes are not imported to Uzbekistan at lower prices in the near future, it is unlikely that the price of the vegetable will decrease significantly.
