Chinese President Xi Jinping plans to hold the first virtual meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky since the start of the war, The Wall Street Journal informs.
The meeting is expected to take place virtually and may be organized after Xi Jinping meets with the Russian president.
"The meetings with Messrs. Putin and Zelenskyy, the latter of which is expected to take place virtually, reflect Beijing’s effort to play a more active role in mediating an end to the war in Ukraine, some of the people said." - WSJ.
If online talks with Zelenskyy happen, it will be an important step in China's efforts to play a peacekeeping role, because Europe has been looking at China with suspicion for some time now.
The WSJ added that it would boost China's image as a global power after Iran and Saudi Arabia held talks in Beijing last week to restore diplomatic ties after seven years.
Earlier, Zelensky said that if he meets with the President of China, this meeting will benefit the security of the two countries and the world. Chinese President Xi Jinping plans to go to Russia next week to meet his counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
