The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Kazakhstan reports that since the beginning of the year, 3,134 ethnic Kazakhs (Kandas) have migrated to Kazakhstan, including 8.4% from Turkmenistan.
More than half of the migrants arriving in Kazakhstan (50.0%) are from Uzbekistan, 16.3% from China, and 15.9% from Russia.
The number of ethnic migrants of working age is 69.1%.
The Mangistau province of Kazakhstan, bordering Turkmenistan, has the second-highest number of migrants (after Almaty). Since 1991, a total of 1.1mn ethnic Kazakhs have returned to the republic.
It should be noted that the fourth largest diaspora in Turkmenistan is Kazakhs, who have long lived in the western region of the country, near the Caspian cities of Krasnovodsk (now Turkmenbashi) and Bekdash.
Under Soviet rule, following the demarcation of borders in the 1920s, many Turkmen ended up in the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan and Kazakhs in the Balkan region of Turkmenistan.
Kazakhstan's State Statistics Committee previously reported that the total number of migrants from Turkmenistan to Kazakhstan between 1991 and 2014 was about 65,000.
