A 22-year-old girl committed suicide on her wedding day due to forced marriage in the Parwan region of Afghanistan, reports Etilaatroz.
The young woman shot herself with a Kalashnikov assault rifle on March 11 at around 18:00 local time. The incident took place in the village of Turi, Shaykh Ali district. A local source said that the girl's family had forced her to marry a man without her consent, so she committed suicide on the day of the wedding.
Forced marriage, domestic violence, and mental health problems are reported as the main causes of female suicide in Afghanistan.
The official representative of the "Taliban" movement has previously announced that forced marriage is prohibited in Afghanistan. Based on the ban, a 50-year-old man was not allowed to forcibly marry a 12-year-old girl in the Kunduz region. People found responsible for the crime have been arrested and are awaiting trial. "Taliban" announced that those who do not comply with the ban will be held legally responsible.
