United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) on Monday (March 6), calling it 'one of the most important annual events at the United Nation, Reuters reports.
In particular, Guterres said the CSW 'takes on even greater significance at a time when women's rights are being abused, threatened, and violated around the world.'
The Secretary-General also emphasized that gender equality is 'growing more distant.'
'On the current track, UN Women puts it 300 years away.'
Antonio Guterres added in French that 'international frameworks are not working for the world's women and girls,' and he stressed the need for change.
'I have instructed the UN system that all our support to member states in preparing for the Summit of the Future must reflect our commitment to gender equality and women's rights,' he said.
Members of the CSW are elected by the U.N. Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which promotes international cooperation on economic, social, cultural, educational, health, and related issues.
The sixty-seventh session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place from 6 to 17 March 2023.
