Uzbekistan softens some laws on terms of imprisonment

In Uzbekistan, the conditional release period of strictly controlled prisoners can be replaced with a common prison.

According to the draft law discussed at the meeting of the Legislative Chamber, changes and additions are being made to the Criminal and Criminal-Executive Codes where:  

• the period of conditional release and commutation of the sentence can be applied to those who have committed serious and grave crimes;
• the law might be applied after serving at least half of the sentence for serious crimes, or 2/3 of extremely serious crimes.

Also, the period of finding arbitrarily abandoned the territory of the penal institution is reduced from 24 hours to 12 hours.
