At least 15 people were killed in Türkiye early on Monday (February 6) after the strong 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook the country’s south, local officials said, with the death toll expected to rise as many buildings were destroyed, the Guardian reports.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency of Turkey (AFAD) said the quake first struck at 4:17 am local time (0117 GMT), in the town of Pazarcık, an hour north of Gaziantep, a key industrial city in southern Türkiye. Reportedly, the second tremor was felt at 04:26 am local time (0126GMT), with the epicenter in the town of Nurdağı, some 80km (50 miles) southwest.
The US Geological Survey reported the quake was centered almost 18km (11 miles) deep, and a strong 6.7 aftershock rumbled about 10 minutes later.
