Speaking at the press conference on Thursday (November 17), the US Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Jonathan Henick, spoke about Uzbekistan’s role as a member of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS). Earlier this month, the republic’s historic city of Samarkand hosted the OTS summit titled ‘New era for the Turkic civilization: Towards common development and prosperity.’
‘We see Uzbekistan as an essential partner of OTS. And we also have good relations with many of the countries in the Organization of Turkic states, including Turkey, our NATO partner. I was recently the US Consul-General in Istanbul, Turkey. I visited the Secretary-General of the Organization of Turkic states in his office there. We had an excellent conversation about the many areas of cooperation that we had identified. Fundamentally, I would say that the United States has a positive view of this organization and its work. One of the areas we discussed was culture and language. And I explained to the Secretary-General that the United States, our embassies in each of these countries, have very robust programs to support the culture and local languages of these countries, including here in Uzbekistan, where we have cultural preservation programs to preserve some of the historic cultural properties and other programs that make television programming from outside of Uzbekistan available here in Uzbekistan, in the Uzbek language.
Besides, the Ambassador emphasized that Uzbekistan has an incredibly long and rich cultural history.
‘And the US embassy will always be a partner for the Government of Uzbekistan and for the Uzbek people in preserving and strengthening their culture’, Jonathan Henick said. ‘The organization of Turkic states is a promising organization, but it's up to the members to decide what goals they can pursue collectively’, Ambassador added.
The US envoy also stressed that Uzbekistan’s government is doing tremendous work to promote the culture, the Uzbek language, and greater awareness of the country’s history.
