This year's COP27 climate summit in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh is currently in its final week, with nearly 200 countries racing to strike a deal to steer the world towards cutting planet-warming emissions.
'Uzbekistan's main goal lies in achieving economic progress by integrating the principles of ‘green economy’ into structural reforms that are being implemented. The priority in this area is low-carbon development and resource-saving in all sectors of the economy, the introduction of efficient and environmentally friendly technologies, the Chairperson of Uzbekistan’s Senate Tanzila Narbayeva noted.
Following the principles of the Paris Climate Agreement, Uzbekistan reaffirms its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions per unit of GDP by 35% by 2030.
By 2026 the country plans to increase the share of ‘green’ energy to 8,000 MW, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 5mn tons. In addition, the economy's energy efficiency will be doubled, and the share of renewable energy will increase to a minimum of 25% by 2030.
Mitigation of the effects of climate change in the republic is promoted mainly by the Yashilmakon (‘Green space’) nationwide project, which envisages increasing greenspace from the current 8% to the anticipated 30%.
Over the past five years, more than 1.7mn ha have been planted on the Aral Sea’s drained seabed. This indicator will reach 2.5mn ha or almost 80% of the territory by 2026.
