Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Innovative Development is to partner with Chinese biotechnology company ‘BGI’ in the introduction of approaches to the early detection of genetic disorders in newborns, children, and adults.
The joint project is estimated at $500mn. It envisages the exploitation of a newly created ‘Gensgreen’ joint venture that would develop and conduct the neonatal screening of orphaned diseases, as well as various genetic tests for the public and local laboratories, including non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) Pregnancy for early diagnosis of Down, Edwards, and Patau syndromes and pre-implantation genetic testing (PST) for detection of chromosomal abnormalities in embryos during IVF procedure.
The laboratory base would allow the conduction of over 1mn tests per year. In addition to newborn screening tests, the enterprise is to provide genetic testing services in the field of hereditary, oncological, genetic, and clinical diseases.
