In 2022, Uzbekistan allowed exterminating more than 18,000 animals. This was reported by the "Ekolog" Telegram channel.
According to the photos provided by the Eco-channel, the chairman of the committee, Narzulla Oblomurodov, signed the quota aimed at hunting 18,141 and 8 rare and endangered wild animals included in the "Red Book" list of Uzbekistan with order No. 181 dated May 10, 2022.
"Despite the public's constant objections, it is very sad that hunting quotas are being given by the organization that is in charge of protecting wild animals. It seems that the head of the committee did not learn from the brown bear hunting incident (endangered species), authorized by the former chairman of the committee, Alisher Maksudov, in March 2021," the author of the channel writes.
Although the quota was issued for hunting 18,141 animals, in reality, there are more cases of law violation observed in Uzbekistan.
For years "Ekologuz", group of environmentalists, has proposed to introduce a moratorium on hunting wild animals. However, the initiative was not supported by the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection, the State Committee on Forestry, the Association of Hunters, and organizations involved in hunting.
"We consider this situation to be an unforgivable mistake. Cruelty to wildlife is cruelty to society," the message reads.
