The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is stepping up efforts to enhance water security in the Kyrgyz Republic by financing up to €17mn in vital infrastructure upgrades. These funds will support the modernization of water supply networks and wastewater treatment facilities in key municipalities in the north of the country.
The financial package includes a loan of up to €7.6mn, matched by a similar-sized grant. The investment will focus on upgrading pumping stations, installing water meters, and restoring sewerage systems in the municipalities of Kemin, Shopokov, and Talas.
Additionally, the EBRD will provide technical cooperation grants of up to €1.8mn, aimed at supporting the implementation of the projects and strengthening the capacity of municipal utilities.
The Kyrgyz Republic faces challenges in water resource management, with freshwater supplies increasingly threatened by global warming and the melting of glaciers, which are key sources of water. The new initiatives will help improve the efficiency of water use, easing pressure on the country's dwindling water resources.
EBRD Managing Director for Central Asia, Hüseyin Özhan, expressed his pride in the bank’s continued leadership in the country’s water sector, stating,
“We have supported 31 water projects for the amount of more than €190mn in 26 cities across the Kyrgyz Republic. These efforts are ensuring that households and businesses receive regular access to high-quality water and wastewater services.”
The EBRD’s commitment to Kyrgyzstan dates back to 1992, with the bank investing nearly €998mn across 250 projects, primarily in sustainable infrastructure and the private sector.
