Uzbekistan and Hungary have signed a cooperation protocol within the framework of the Uzbek nuclear power plant (NPP) construction project, according to Uzatom.

The protocol was signed during the Hungarian delegation’s working visit to Uzbekistan, with representatives from Uzbekistan’s Uzatom Agency, Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Hungarian energy firm MVM EGI. in attendance. The agreement outlines key areas of collaboration, particularly focusing on technological, industrial, and educational dimensions of the NPP project.
A central element of the agreement is the adoption of dry cooling systems with mechanical traction—an advanced, water-conserving technology critical to sustainable plant operation in arid environments. In support of this, the parties agreed to prepare technical and commercial proposals for supplying the necessary equipment.

To further strengthen local capacity, both sides committed to creating a joint venture in Uzbekistan for the large-scale assembly of this infrastructure. Located in a free economic zone, the new facility will enhance domestic participation in the project and contribute to the broader industrial development of the region.
Education and workforce development were also highlighted in the agreement. The Hungarian side expressed commitment to supporting the training and retraining of Uzbek specialists through educational programs and internships, reinforcing the human capital required for the long-term success of the nuclear project.

Multilateral negotiations were held in Tashkent, bringing together representatives from Uzatom, Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, MVM EGI Pólus, OTP Bank Uzbekistan, and Russia’s Atomstroyexport and Atomenergoproekt. The talks focused on operational models for the supply and manufacturing of dry cooling towers and strategies to maximize local involvement in the project.
All parties emphasized the importance of building a transparent and mutually beneficial partnership, with a shared vision for advancing nuclear energy cooperation and industrial growth in Central Asia.
