President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, Acting Deputy Prime Minister of Afghanistan for Economic Affairs, on the sidelines of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) summit held in Khankendi. The two sides discussed expanding economic cooperation across several key sectors.

During the meeting, President Mirziyoyev and Mullah Baradar focused on strengthening partnerships in trade, transport and logistics, energy, and industrial development.
Both leaders noted the steady growth in trade turnover and the rise in the number of joint ventures between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.
The sides welcomed recent milestones, including the opening of Uzbek trading houses in Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif in May, and the signing of a preferential trade agreement in June aimed at boosting bilateral commerce.

President Mirziyoyev highlighted the importance of further developing cross-border trade and infrastructure. He emphasized opportunities for cooperation in mining, textiles, pharmaceuticals, building materials, and agricultural processing.
The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating the construction of the Trans-Afghan Railway — a major regional initiative expected to enhance connectivity between Central and South Asia and promote economic integration.
