Kazakhstan's metallurgical sector posted solid growth in the first four months of 2025, with steel production rising by 9.1% y/y to reach 1.41mn tons, according to GMK Center, citing the Statistical Committee of the Ministry of Economy.

Flat steel production saw even stronger growth, increasing by 14.8% to 957,990 tons during the January–April period.
In April alone, steel output totaled 369,630 tons, up 1.2% from March and 5% compared to April 2024. The production of finished products reached 246,540 tons — a 0.8% y/y increase — but remained flat month-on-month.
This momentum builds on last year’s performance, when Kazakhstan increased annual steel production by 9.5% to 4.17mn tons. In 2024, flat production jumped 18.2% y/y to 2.9mn tons.
A key contributor to the sector’s strong showing is Qarmet Iron and Steel Works, one of Kazakhstan’s leading producers. In 2024, Qarmet exceeded its annual targets, producing 15% more steel, 18% more coke, 12% more sinter, and 17% more long products than planned.
In January 2025 alone, Qarmet boosted steel output to 319,000 tons, a 32.3% increase from the previous month. Plate Mill No. 1 produced 264,000 tons of finished products, surpassing its monthly target by 3.7%. For the full year, Qarmet aims to produce 3.7mn tons of steel.
The company is also expanding its industrial footprint. In 2024, it partnered with China’s Xinxing Ductile Iron Pipes Co to construct a cast iron pipe plant in Kazakhstan with a projected annual capacity of 200,000 tons and an investment of $161mn.
Additionally, Qarmet signed a $1bn cooperation agreement with China Metallurgical Group, aimed at strengthening long-term collaboration in the mining and metals sectors.
