Azia Metall Prof, the largest steel producer in Uzbekistan, has announced plans to construct a steel mill in Kazakhstan. The project is estimated to cost $106.9mn, SteelRadar reported.
The proposed plant will be located in the Taraz Industrial Zone in southern Kazakhstan. Azia Metall Prof intends to produce square billets and thin-gauge galvanized steel with a polymer coating at the new facility.
Negotiations between the company's investors and local authorities are already underway. Discussions focus on essential aspects such as energy availability, engineering requirements, and transport infrastructure. Regional authorities have expressed their support for the project, emphasizing the need for the plant to comply with environmental standards.
A land plot for the construction has been allocated and all relevant documents have been secured. The current phase involves preparing the estimate and design documentation.
The Taraz Industrial Zone, situated in the Zhambyl region within the cities of Karatau and Taraz, hosts nine projects with a total investment of KZT 74.6bn ($159.8mn), as per the Taraz Social and Entrepreneurial Corporation.
Steel production in Kazakhstan is expected to grow by 13% in 2024 compared to 2023, reaching 3.3mn tons. Iron ore concentrate production is anticipated to increase by 10%, reaching 10mn tons. However, coal production is projected to decline by 2%.
Earlier GMK Center indicated that Kazakhstan increased its steel production by 3.6% year-on-year from January to May 2024, totaling 1.68mn tons. Output of flat products reached 1.08mn tons, marking a 5.8% y/y increase.
