The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) are financing a major upgrade of the Dangara-Guliston road, a crucial transport link in Tajikistan.

Originally built in the 1930s as part of an international highway, the road connects the north and south of the Khatlon region, which produces over 53% of Tajikistan’s agricultural output and is home to 35% of the population.
The EBRD is providing a sovereign loan of up to $41.3mn (€38mn) to support upgrades to a 49 km section of the road and the installation of charging stations for electric vehicles. The ADB is contributing up to $86.7mn in grant financing for the project.
The upgrades will transform the existing single-carriageway category II road into a dual-carriageway category I road, enhancing traffic capacity and reducing cargo delivery times across the region. Additional features will include improved lighting, cycle paths, and pedestrian walkways to ensure safer mobility for all, including parents with children and people with disabilities.
This will be one of the first roads in Tajikistan equipped with electric vehicle charging stations, encouraging the adoption of electric mobility and the development of related infrastructure. The EBRD will also provide technical cooperation funding to support the creation of a national electric mobility action plan, aimed at attracting public and private investment in sustainable transport solutions.
To date, the EBRD has invested over €1bn in Tajikistan through 183 projects, contributing to the country’s economic growth and infrastructure development.
