Authorities have obtained crucial data from the black boxes of the Azerbaijan Airlines plane that crashed in Kazakhstan on December 25, 2024, killing 38 of the 67 people on board. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with the plane having been diverted from its scheduled landing in Grozny, Chechnya, and various claims surrounding its potential downing by Russian air defenses.
Brazil’s air force successfully extracted data from two black box recorders, which include both cockpit dialogue and flight data. The information was analyzed in Brasília before being handed over to the Kazakhstan investigation authorities in line with international protocols for aircraft accident inquiries. Kazakhstan is now responsible for releasing the findings from the data.
“The data was handed over to Kazakhstan’s investigation authority, as per international protocols,” said a statement from Brazil’s air force.
The Brazilian-made Embraer 190 aircraft was reportedly shot down by Russian air defenses, according to Azerbaijan’s claims. However, Moscow has denied these allegations, stating that the plane’s route brought it into the vicinity of Grozny, which was under attack by Ukrainian drones at the time.
“I can confidently say that responsibility for this catastrophe lies with representatives of the Russian Federation. We demand justice, punishment for those responsible, full transparency, and humane treatment in addressing this tragedy," stated Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, speaking to the crash victims' families on January 6.
As the investigation continues, officials from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Russia have traveled to Brazil to examine the black box data. The data was reviewed by the Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Centre, a unit of Brazil’s air force.
The crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines plane has prompted international scrutiny, with many calling for transparency and a full explanation of the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
