Sweden has donated SEK 100mn ($9mn) to the UN Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan (STFA), aiming to address the country's escalating humanitarian crisis. The fund announced the contribution on December 13, thanking the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) for its support.
“This vital support will empower Afghan communities by fostering resilience, hope, and sustainable solutions during challenging times,” the STFA stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter), adding, “Together, we’re creating a lasting impact.”
The STFA, established in 2021 following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, plays a critical role in supporting humanitarian and development initiatives. Its efforts include delivering essential aid to vulnerable populations and championing human rights and women’s empowerment programs.
Since its inception, the fund has mobilized $204mn, according to its 2023 annual report. It has provided assistance to over 5mn people, nearly half of whom are women. Contributions from various countries and organizations are allocated based on assessed needs by the UN and its partners operating within Afghanistan.
Sweden's contribution comes as Afghanistan faces an acute humanitarian crisis, with 23.7mn people—more than half the population—requiring urgent aid, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The World Food Programme (WFP) has reported that nearly 15mn people are experiencing critical food shortages, with many at risk of hunger during the harsh winter months. Despite these urgent needs, the UN’s $3.1bn humanitarian appeal for Afghanistan remains severely underfunded, with just 37.5% of the required funds secured as of November.
Humanitarian agencies have warned that without sustained financial assistance, the situation could deteriorate further, leaving millions without adequate food, shelter, and heating.
