OCHA highlighted that the funds will support vulnerable populations in Afghanistan as donor countries strive to meet the growing humanitarian needs in the region. This commitment comes as the AHF reported that donor nations collectively contributed $1bn to the fund over the past year.
The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan has been exacerbated since the Taliban regained power in 2021, leading to a significant deterioration in the country’s economic conditions. Millions of citizens now face increasingly dire circumstances, prompting urgent calls for continued international support.
Earlier, OCHA also noted that the Netherlands has pledged over $16mn in aid to Afghanistan, while Norway has committed NOK 20mn ( $1.8mn) to the AHF for 2024. Other countries, including Sweden, Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Switzerland, have made substantial contributions to the fund in the past year.
U.N. reports indicate that approximately 24mn people in Afghanistan, including 12.3mn children, require urgent humanitarian assistance in 2024. This alarming statistic highlights the critical need for continued support from the international community to combat the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region.
