Dating telegram groups entitled ‘Sovchilar’ (Matchmakers) have gained popularity in Uzbekistan, reaching tens of thousands of subscribers nationwide, media reports. These groups are intended to help people find their soulmates. However, many locals started searching for second wives, and surprisingly, many ladies looking for husbands note they would admit to being the second one, media stresses.
At the same time, polygamy is prohibited in Uzbekistan, but despite this, the media states that many men openly seek second wives and live without concealing them.
Article 126 of Uzbekistan's Criminal Code states that polygamy is punishable with a fine, correctional labor, or imprisonment of up to three years.
