Uzbekistan has put forward a proposal to establish a Turkic Environmental Council to address pressing climate change challenges in the region. In his speech at the Informal Summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) in Shusha, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts among OTS member states to tackle environmental issues.
Mirziyoyev underscored the severe impact of climate change on the OTS region: "It would be correct to say that our Organization covers a region most affected by climate change." To systematically address these challenges, he proposed creating a Turkic Environmental Council at the ministerial level. "I hope you will support our initiative to establish a Turkic Environmental Council at the ministerial level to systematically address existing problems," he stated.
He suggested that the headquarters of this council be located in Nukus, a large city in the Aral Sea region, which has been significantly affected by environmental disasters. "It would be expedient to locate the headquarters of this structure in Nukus, a large city in the Aral Sea region, the area most affected by the environmental disaster," Mirziyoyev proposed.
Mirziyoyev expressed pride in the increasing involvement of the Turkic world in international climate cooperation. "I am particularly proud to note that today the voice of the Turkic world is increasingly heard in international climate cooperation," he remarked.
He highlighted the upcoming 29th Climate Summit (COP-29) of the United Nations, to be held in Baku in November, as a significant event for all OTS countries. "The upcoming 29th Climate Summit (COP-29) of the United Nations, to be held in Baku in November this year, will be a significant historical event for all our countries," Mirziyoyev noted.
