The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Balakrishnan Rajagopal, will visit Uzbekistan from August 19 to August 30. During his visit, Rajagopal will assess the protection and implementation of the right to housing within the country, focusing on housing availability, affordability, and suitability, as well as mechanisms for protection against forced eviction.
Rajagopal will review the measures taken by the government of Uzbekistan to ensure the right to adequate housing for all segments of the population. He will also investigate the impact of the climate crisis on housing conditions and explore opportunities for citizen participation in housing and urban development decisions.
The Special Rapporteur's itinerary includes visits to Tashkent, Jizzakh, Samarkand, and Bukhara, as well as nearby areas. He will inspect student dormitories, shelters for victims of domestic violence, and facilities for the homeless. Meetings are scheduled with central and regional government officials, judges, civil society representatives, and members of the business community.
On August 30, Rajagopal will hold a press conference in Tashkent to discuss his findings. He will present a comprehensive report on Uzbekistan to the UN Human Rights Council in March 2025.
Balakrishnan Rajagopal began his role as the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing on May 1, 2020. He is a Professor of Law and Development at MIT, specializing in human rights issues related to economic, social, and cultural rights, the UN system, and development challenges.
Special Rapporteurs are part of the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council. They work on a voluntary basis, are independent from any government or organization, and do not receive a salary for their work.
