The sale of car number plates in Uzbekistan saw a significant surge in the 1H24, with the volume tripling to UZS 426.2bn (nearly $34mn), according to Uzbek Republican Commodity and Raw Materials Exchange (UZEX). Between January and June, 104,900 licence plates were sold through UZEX's electronic trading system, avtoraqam.uzex.uz.
This represents a threefold increase in both the number of plates sold and their total value compared to the same period last year. The majority of these transactions, 97%, were made by individuals, while the remaining 3% were by legal entities.
The price range for car number plates varied widely. The least expensive plate was sold for UZS 1.7mn ($135), while the most expensive one was purchased for UZS 517.14mn (over $41,000) by a legal entity from Uzbekistan's Tashkent. This price was notably higher than the starting bid, reflecting a two-thirds increase.
Another high-value transaction took place on July 10, when a number plate sold for UZS 508 mn (almost $40,500), marking the second most expensive plate sold during this period.
In 2023, 87,000 car number plates were sold through the commodity exchange, generating UZS 396.1bn ($31.6mn) in revenue. The highest price for a car number plate that year was UZS 450mn (nearly $36,000), which slightly exceeded the previous record set in 2021.
Additionally, in 1Q24, the sales of car number plates at the commodity exchange tripled to UZS 212.2bn ($16.9mn), underscoring the robust growth in this market.
