John Bolton, the former National Security Advisor of the United States, called on Washington to provide assistance to the resistance forces opposing the Taliban in Afghanistan, on July 9. Atlas Press reported Bolton's statements, emphasizing the need for U.S. intervention to support those combating the current regime.
Bolton highlighted the situation in Afghanistan, urging the U.S. to step in with military and economic support for the resistance forces. He asserted that such assistance is pivotal for strengthening these groups and enhancing their capacity to oppose armed Taliban factions.
"The long-term solution to the problem is to get rid of the Taliban. Helping resistance groups inside Afghanistan and providing economic and military packages will allow the opposition to grow," Bolton stated.
The former advisor rejected any future collaboration between American officials and the Taliban, arguing that there is no benefit for Washington in such engagements. According to Bolton, the focus should be on empowering the Afghan resistance rather than negotiating with the current rulers.
The report also touched upon a recent meeting between U.S. intelligence officials and Taliban representatives. A few days prior, Bolton met with David Cohen, the deputy director of the U.S. intelligence agency, and Abdul Haq Watiq, the head of the Taliban's intelligence in Qatar. During this meeting, Cohen reportedly stated that the U.S. would not leverage Afghan resistance forces. However, Bolton later contradicted this stance in an interview, reaffirming his call for support for the opposition.
