Uzbekistan agreed to collaborate on a Framework Program for Cooperation with the UN on Uzbekistan's Sustainable Development Goals for 2026–2030, as it was disclosed by presidential press service.
On July 1, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan welcomed United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the Kuksaroy residence for a meeting during Guterres' official visit to the country.
At the start of the meeting, Secretary-General Guterres expressed his sincere gratitude to President Mirziyoyev for the invitation and the warm reception. President Mirziyoyev, in turn, highlighted the significance of Guterres' visit as a testament to the UN’s commitment to supporting Uzbekistan's transformative initiatives.
The discussions between the two leaders covered a wide range of issues, including global and regional peace, stability, sustainable development, and the expansion of multifaceted cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UN. They also reviewed the progress of joint projects aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Uzbekistan's recent election to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the Governing Body of the International Labor Organization, as well as the appointment of a representative to the UN Human Rights Committee, were acknowledged as significant milestones. Additionally, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has established its representative office in Tashkent.
The meeting also highlighted major international events jointly organized by Uzbekistan and the UN, focusing on food security, tourism development, poverty alleviation, climate change, and biodiversity protection. In particular, the 43rd General Conference of UNESCO, scheduled to be held in Samarkand next year, was mentioned as a key upcoming event.
The leaders exchanged views on current international and regional issues. President Mirziyoyev expressed strong support for Secretary-General Guterres' initiatives to ensure international security and stability, reform the UN and its main bodies, and host the Future Summit in New York this year.
Discussions also covered the development of transport connectivity, and ensuring food, energy, and information security in the region.
