USAID enhances Uzbekistan's energy oversight with $50,000 IT equipment donation

USAID enhances Uzbekistan's energy oversight with $50,000 IT equipment donation

The Energy Market Development and Regulatory Agency of Uzbekistan received a boost from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) with the handover of new IT equipment valued at approximately $50,000. This initiative marks a step towards enhancing the agency’s capacity to oversee and regulate the energy sector effectively.

The equipment donation, comprising computers, printers, and telecommunications gear, is tailored to bolster the agency’s operational capabilities as it progresses through the next phase of reforms outlined in a presidential decree issued in September 2023.

These reforms are aimed at modernizing and expanding Uzbekistan’s energy landscape, crucial for ensuring a reliable electricity supply and attracting vital private investments.

USAID Acting Mission Director in Uzbekistan, Edward Michalski, stressed the role of robust regulatory frameworks in fostering sustainable development and economic growth.

"Effective energy sector regulation is paramount to achieving a stable electricity supply, attracting essential investments, and safeguarding consumer interests," noted Michalski.

He highlighted USAID’s commitment to supporting Uzbekistan in fortifying its legal and institutional frameworks through collaborative efforts aimed at promoting a more liberalized and resilient energy sector.

The new IT equipment is expected to streamline day-to-day operations for agency personnel, enabling more efficient management of regulatory processes. This enhancement promises to foster a more cohesive and responsive regulatory environment within the energy sector, crucial for sustainable development goals.

This equipment provision is part of USAID’s broader regional initiative, Power Central Asia, with a total budget of $39mn over five years. The project aims to strengthen Uzbekistan’s energy sector performance, accelerate the development of clean energy solutions, and bolster energy security through enhanced regional connectivity and expanded cross-border electricity trade.

Looking ahead, USAID reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Energy Market Development and Regulatory Agency through ongoing technical advisory services, the development of critical regulatory frameworks, and comprehensive training programs.
