The Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) network handled over 102 mn tons of cargo in 5M24. Nationwide, cargo loading increased by 2.5% compared to last year's period, totalling 68.2 mn tons. Rail exports comprised over 34.2 mn tons of the total volume.
The loading of hard coal reached 40.6 mn tons, with 30.3 mn tons transported domestically. During this period, more than 3.7 mn tons of grain were transported by rail. The loading of ferrous metals rose by 6.8% to 1.8 mn tons. The transportation of iron ore and manganese increased by 12.1%, reaching 8.8 mn tons, while non-ferrous ore and sulfur raw materials saw a 14% rise, amounting to 10 mn tons.
Export volumes grew across several categories. Grinding products rose by 2.3% to over 1 mn tons. Oil cargo increased by 9.5%, reaching 2.3 mn tons. Ferrous metals grew by 5% to 1.4 mn tons. Chemical fertilizers rose by 12%, surpassing 550,000 tons. Iron ore and manganese increased by 8.4% to 4.7 mn tons. Construction materials grew by 9%, reaching 142,000 tons.
Within the republic, grain loading increased by 2%, totalling 956,000 tons. The loading of ferrous metals rose by 12.5% to 438,000 tons. Iron ore and manganese loading increased by 16.8%, reaching 4 mn tons, while non-ferrous ore and sulfur raw materials rose by 17.4%, totalling 8.5 mn tons.
In May 2024, the Caspian port of Aktau handled over 5,100 shipping containers, setting a new monthly record. Over 5M24, 15,800 containers were processed, doubling the volume from the same period in 2023. "Since the beginning of the year, container traffic through the port of Aktau has experienced significant growth," noted the seaport's chief dispatcher Vadim Novikov.
"The majority of this traffic is due to container transit from China along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), which has grown tenfold following the launch of the Kazakh-Chinese terminal in Xi'an," he added.
