The volume of cargo transportation between Kazakhstan and China has surged to a historic high, surpassing 28 mn tons. The milestone was announced during the inaugural Kazakh-Chinese grain forum held in China, which convened representatives from the Ministry of Transport, business entities, and government agencies.
During the forum, discussions revolved around exploring further avenues for enhancing trade turnover between Kazakhstan and the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with deliberations on the conditions governing the export of cargo. It was revealed that the volume of cargo transportation has surged by 22% compared to figures recorded in 2022.
Kazakhstan, in particular, demonstrated growth in its export shipments, with shippers dispatching over 12.6 mn tons of goods to China—an increase of 35% from the previous year. The Kazakh delegation also took the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the operations of the newly established terminal in the bonded zone of the Alashankou station, specializing in the unloading of grain crops and vegetable oils.
Strides were made in cementing transportation technologies and bolstering the acceptance of Kazakh agricultural products during the discussions. An outcome of the forum was the agreement to establish a dedicated working group tasked with identifying and addressing any challenges that may arise during the transportation of exports to China.
Kelbuganov Nurzhan Amangeldinovich, Deputy Chairman of the Committee of Railway and Water Transport of the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan, stressed the pivotal role played by collaboration in facilitating this exponential growth in trade. He emphasized the importance of joint efforts in resuming transportation to China following the disruptions caused by the pandemic.
"Today, one of the main crops supplied by Kazakhstan to China is barley and wheat."
He elaborated on the substantial increase in grain exports witnessed over the past years, with exports surging from 347,000 tons in 2021 to an impressive 2.2 mn in 2023—an exponential growth of threefold.
