Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban's reclusive supreme leader, delivered a cautionary message to Afghans, urging them to prioritize religious duties over material pursuits. Speaking in southern Kandahar province during the festival of Eid al-Adha, Akhundzada emphasized the importance of unity and adherence to Islamic principles during Afghanistan's challenging times.
Akhundzada's address highlighted the need for Afghans to focus on worshipping Allah rather than seeking financial gain or worldly recognition. He stated, "We were created to worship Allah and not to earn money or gain worldly honour." This message comes at a time when Afghanistan is facing humanitarian crises and is isolated on the global stage.
In his speech, Akhundzada reiterated the importance of unity among Muslims and the implementation of Islamic law in Afghanistan. He expressed discontent over internal divisions and urged for solidarity among citizens and Taliban officials. Akhundzada emphasized that disunity only benefits the enemy and hinders the establishment of justice and Islamic governance in the country.
The Taliban's upcoming participation in UN-hosted talks in Qatar's Doha represents a notable development since the group took power in August 2021. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric clarified that the invitation to the Doha meeting at the end of June does not imply recognition of the Taliban.
The Taliban are not acknowledged by any country as the legitimate rulers of Afghanistan.
The statement from Akhundzada reveals the internal affairs of the Taliban. Tensions between hardliners and more moderate factions, as demonstrated in previous messages by influential figures like Sirajuddin Haqqani, indicate a broader debate within the group regarding policies and external relations. Speaking out against the divisions and arguments between civilians and Taliban officials, Akhundzada conveyed his wish for Muslim unity.
