China and Pakistan urge Taliban to form inclusive government and combat terrorism

China and Pakistan urge Taliban to form inclusive government and combat terrorism

In a joint statement issued by China and Pakistan, both nations have called on the Taliban to establish an inclusive government and intensify efforts against terrorism. The announcement, reported by Hasht-e Subh Daily, comes amidst a four-day visit by Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif to China, where the two countries have stressed their shared interests in the stability of Afghanistan.

The joint statement emphasizes the necessity for the Taliban to adopt moderate policies that respect the interests of neighboring countries. It discourages the use of military force and urges diplomatic resolutions to conflicts.

Specifically, the Taliban are urged to refrain from allowing terrorist groups to operate from Afghan soil, excluding attacks solely within their own territory. Additionally, international organizations are cautioned against providing asylum to such groups.

The statement emphasized condemning the March 26, 2024, attack on a convoy of Chinese engineers in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Both China and Pakistan expressed solidarity against any attempts to undermine their bilateral relations, reaffirming their commitment to joint efforts against terrorism.

The collaboration between Beijing and Islamabad against terrorism is reiterated in the statement, with both nations expressing willingness to engage with the international community to address this global challenge. This joint stance signals a concerted effort by China and Pakistan to advocate for stability in Afghanistan and curb the threat of terrorism emanating from the region.

The call for an inclusive government by China and Pakistan represents a significant diplomatic move, highlighting their proactive approach to engage with the Taliban and influence the trajectory of Afghanistan's political landscape. As the international community closely monitors developments in Afghanistan, the stance taken by China and Pakistan could potentially shape future discussions and actions regarding the country's governance and security.

The government in Islamabad has been accusing the Taliban of supporting terrorist attacks in Pakistan through the Tehrik-e Taliban group. Additionally, Pakistan alleges that the Haqqani Network, an affiliate of the Taliban, has ties with ISIS.
