Kazakhstan remitted KZT 65.8 bn (approximately $147.6 mn) abroad through international money transfer systems (IMTS) in April 2024. This represents an 11.1% increase from March when KZT 59.3 bn (around $133 mn) was sent abroad.
Data from the National Bank of Kazakhstan shows a 6.6% increase in the number of transactions in April 2024, totalling 205,200 compared to 192,400 transactions in March.
In April, the largest transfers abroad were made through providers such as Zolotaya Korona, Western Union, and Moneygram.
The leading destinations for remittances from Kazakhstan in April 2024 were:
- Russia: KZT 21.3 bn (approximately $47.7 mn), accounting for 32.3% of the total transfers.
- Uzbekistan: KZT 18 bn (around $40.3 mn), making up 27.4%.
- Türkiye: KZT 12.6 bn (about $28.2 mn), comprising 19.1% of the total.
US dollars and Kazakhstani tenge were the primary currencies used in remittances. US dollars accounted for 29.4% of the total number of transfers and 53.3% of the total volume. Kazakhstani tenge constituted 57.8% of the total number of transfers and 36% of the total volume.
In April 2024, the total number of money transfers through IMTS in Kazakhstan reached 209,400 transactions, amounting to KZT 67.8 bn (around $152.1 mn). This reflects a 6.7% increase in the number of transactions and a 10.2% rise in the volume compared to March 2024, which saw 196,200 transactions worth $138 mn.
