Kazakhstan is studying the possibility of importing energy resources from Turkmenistan, the country's Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev said, the Liter (Kazakhstan) reports .
"...In general, we are ready to consider the proposals of our Turkmen colleagues on both gas and electricity, depending on the commercial attractiveness for our consumers," the official said at a briefing.
The information said that if Turkmenistan offered more favourable terms, it could replace Russia as a supplier.
"It depends on the agreements. Yes, indeed, if the offer is interesting, we are ready to accept it in order to protect the interests of Kazakh consumers," Satkaliyev added.
KazMunaiGas and KEGOC are expected to hold talks with the Turkmen side.
Turkmenistan, one of the key players in the Central Asian energy market, saw its natural gas production grow by 6.9% and its exports by 12.6% in 2023. During the reporting period, 80.6bn cubic metres of gas were produced.
Last year, Turkmenistan exported gas to China, Russia, Azerbaijan (via Iran) and Uzbekistan. Electricity was imported by Afghanistan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
